Families
One in Five Arizona Kids in Poverty
With 1 in 5 children living in poverty, the opportunities for success can be negatively impacted. In 2009, a family of four earning less than approximately $22,000 annually was considered in poverty.
Replicated research has demonstrated that children who grow up in poverty are at higher risk. Arizona has not been able to move the needle on this indicator, with 20 percent of children living in poverty over the last five years. As the recession continues, more families are likely to be impacted and it is possible we will see this number increase.
Arizona Families
While most dashboards on Arizona Indicators organize data by standard content areas, another way of approaching community indicators is through the lens of a particular subpopulation or social unit. Here, we present a special collection of indicators that center of the family, one of Arizona’s most valuable social assets. Our definition of "family" is multigenerational and inclusive, and this tab is designed to create a central location for complementary data on priority issues that impact families.
This tab presents information about types of family members and their unique characteristics, contributions, and needs. You will find a range of data on children, older adults, and people with disabilities. For example, you can explore data on children’s health, grandparents raising grandchildren, and the employment rate for people with disabilities, to name a few. Family is incredibly important to most Arizonans, and we hope to continually expand this collection of indicators.
