Asthma Hospitalizations and Emergency Room Visits

Description:

Asthma hospitalizations occur when a person is admitted and incurs at least one overnight stay for treatment. A sustainable and healthy community is one where there are minimal asthma hospitalizations from exposure to air pollutants and other triggers. Asthma is a chronic condition that affects more than 15 million Americans. Costs to society include expensive medical treatments, loss of school and work days, and, at worst, death. The emergency room (ER) and the inpatient hospitalization data are mutually exclusive. The ER data include only those who were not admitted as inpatients.

Data Source:

Data for asthma hospitalizations comes from records of the Arizona Department of Health Services' Inpatient and Emergency Room Statistics for Asthma, Table 6 [http://azdhs.gov/plan/hip/for/asthma/].

Data Quality Comments:

Data for asthma hospitalizations comes from records of the Arizona Department of Health Services' Inpatient and Emergency Room Statistics for Asthma, Table 6.

Calculations per 1000 population made using data from US Census intercensal (2000-2009) and postcensal (2010-2012) data.

All county-level data are based on patient zip code of residence and not the location of hospitalization. Federal, military and Department of Veteran Affairs hospitals are excluded. All discharges are for the residents of Arizona. Discharges of out-of-state residents are not included in this report.

Visualization Notes:

An inpatient discharge occurs when a person who was admitted to a hospital (and incurs at least one overnight stay for treatment) leaves that hospital. A person who has been hospitalized more than once in a given calendar year will be counted multiple times as a discharge and included more than once in the hospital inpatient discharge data set; thus, the numbers in this report are for discharges, not persons.
