Arizona Department of Corrections Annual Increase in Number of Inmates
Arizona's prison population has continued to grow steadily throughout the decade. The increase is driven by the influx of both offenders who commit new crimes and individuals on probation or parole who commit "technical violations," including failure to consult with probation officers and failure of a drug test. According to Arizona Department of Corrections, the spike in the number of inmates in 2006 can be partially attributed to an unusually high number of probation revocations issued that year. When a person's probation is revoked, they revert to the underlying sentence, which often is prison time.
