Nonprofit Revenue and Assets Reported in 2011
Not all nonprofits are required to file a form 990 with the IRS disclosing their financial information. For 2011, organizations with over $50,000 in gross receipts were required to file the 990 or 990-EZ, and private foundations were required to file the 990-PF. A total of 8,818 organizations filed an IRS Form 990 in 2011. Religious congregations are not required to register with the IRS or file a 990 of any kind (although some of them do). Therefore, both the total numbers and financial information for congregations are under-reported.
